What’s Repper, exactly?
Repper is an online tool for designing and managing patterns, best suited for geometry-based, production-ready patterns.
So… that’s lot to take in 🤯 Let’s break it down.
An online tool
This means it runs straight in the browser, and that has some big benefits:
- No install needed: No installation files, never a need to update your software
- Always a backup: Your data is stored safely on our servers, just in case your computer breaks or gets stolen
- Access from any computer or tablet: Want to design on tablet and export on laptop? No problem! Show your designs on a friend’s computer. Easy peasy!

Manage your pattern collections
Repper will help you keep your work organized while you design. You can group your work in collections – and there is no limit, so go wild 😉

Each collection holds a number of designs you’ve made, which you can review, reorder, favorite, delete… and export of course!

💁♂️ Learn all about collections in our Help Centre
We’ll get to creating and managing collections later in the course. Already curious, visit our help articles View Collections and Manage Collections.
🔑 Key Takeaways
Patterns represent one of humanity's oldest and most universal forms of visual communication. They cross cultural boundaries while celebrating what makes each culture unique and are a visual language that connects us all across time and place.
🤔 Reflection exercise
As you begin your pattern-making journey, consider that you're joining a conversation that's been ongoing for 100,000 years. What unique voice will you bring to this ancient art form?

This is just a brief introduction highlighting some of the classic patterns throughout history. If you want to learn more, I can recommend the entertaining book Patternalia or the more comprehensive The Chronology of Pattern (non-affiliate links).
